One thing I didn’t get to in this video is the question of why France fought the war at all. It’s a fair question, why would France send so many men to their deaths and spend millions to fight for a jungle on the other side of the world? France was devastated by World War II, financially and emotionally. The government surrendered after only about a month, and began working with Nazi Germany as the Vichy French. After the war, much of France was in ruin, and millions of her people were dead. What good would a colonial war do them so soon afterward?

Well, Yuen Foong Khong does a great job answering this in his book, Analogies at War:

“The user of the analogy [comparing Vietnam to Korea] is likely to see any Western nation fighting the Vietnamese communists as taking the position of the French, the oppressors. It follows that the moral position of such a Western nation is untenable. The political stakes for those fighting the Vietminh/Vietcong are high to medium, but they pertain to the importance of maintaining the grandeur and power of a waning colonial empire.”

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu ended on May 7, 1954, six months before France entered another colonial war in Algeria that ended much the same way as in Vietnam. France was desperate to maintain some semblance of power on a global scale after her collapse in World War II, and that meant holding colonies come hell or high water. Losing colonies, losing a war against what the world viewed as a bunch of backwater peasants, would have been the final nail in the French Empire.

You really deserve the love for your research. I super-like one of your sentence: "Vietnam belongs to Vietnamese", in the Indochina war, Vietnamese just fought only by belief, spirit and recklessness.

Vietnam censorship is like a baby if compare to America or china lol from Vietnam 🙂 you only get in trouble if you are super popular anti govt who aim to overthrew them , we can talk trash about our govt all day on youtube / facebook at long at we are normal civilian who are not trying to organize a huge group to overthrew the govt or creat unrest + the game is not propaganda , just creat by nationalist Vietnamese ( all Vietnamese are nationalist that in our genetic , you have to be nationalistic if you manage to free your self from china after 1000 year of they rule and enemy country who keep invade  you ( include china who keep invade Vietnam everytime they have a chance after we free our self )

Great video, I enjoy the history aspect of the subject, maybe this is a good niche to build on and go more toward history. Gaming channels are pretty saturated on YouTube at the moment and it's hard to get to the surface when you're buried by clickbaits, reaction and current events. If you can do a video on somethings that's really trending at the moment, like Game of Thrones, it would bring views.

I really appreciate this series and the battle field one video and it honestly got me into history all cumulating in me seeking a history degree and captaining 2 history related to history. It’s a great starting point to learn about history through a familiar lense.
