Scott Mantz and Perri Nemiroff review A Star is Born at TIFF 2018. Directed by and co-starring Bradley Cooper, the film follows Lady Gaga as she follows her dreams to make it big as a singer. Sam Elliot, Andrew Dice Clay, and Dave Chapelle also star. The film features original music written by and performed live by Lady Gaga.
This marks the third remake of the original 1937 film, which includes memorable versions starring Judy Garland (1954) and Barbra Streisand (1976). Bradley Cooper makes his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Cooper and Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). The film hits theaters nationwide October 5th.

1st half hr was good but went downhill fast totally predictable self-indulgent pile of crap and way too long Best part was when he pissed his pants and then killed himself….. WHAT A JOKE
We have to remember that, in life, we cannot have the joy without the pain. They are two sides of the same coin—the yin-yang of reality. (I discuss this in my own YT video.) It's because of our darkness that we have such rich beauty and inspiration in the world—which is why the song sung by Lady Gaga (Ally) at the end was so beautiful and soulful. It came from Jack's personal pain—-as well as Ally's, as she was grieving Jack's passing.
Did we watch the same movie? You say the editing is tight but I remember a 2.5 hour movie with about 40 minutes worth of content.
There is an entire scene where two characters just talk about ankle-socks the whole time for no reason.
Take this movie out the back and shoot it.
what a load of bullshit. sanctimonious crap re invented from every other movie 100 times over
I loved it. I think it wall get the acting nominations/awards but not directing & technical awards. JMO.
A Star is Born will be an all win award! It's all the way! Its the greatest movie ever!!
Boring
Now it's Golden Globe drama categories now, same with Bohemian Rhapsody.
This movie was amazing!! No way it won’t be nominated and her performance was spot on
lady gaga paid $2 million to be in this movie
Film Critics are a joke…..i mean really….and when did you produce a movie, direct a movie, let alone star in a movie???? so what give you the audacity to critique and film. let alone rate it. The Oscars and all those other dumb awards are a joke and popularity contest. Want to have a real award show…..have the audience and fans vote for these awards. Then you would see a totally different outcome. Because reality is the fans rarely agree with the awards committee.
This film shocked me. SO AMAZING!! I can't wait to see it again. The MUSIC 🎶 is so amazing.
SPOILERS JUST IN CASE!!!!I never seen the original nor the other remakes. So I came to this movie blind. I was expecting a happy ending for those two and I was really attached to their chemistry only to cry a lot in the end. And it's the 2nd day since I saw it and I'm still thinking about it as you can tell. It hit me hard. And this is the first time that I ever cried at the theaters and I felt so embarressed. I even looked at my gf and I told her it's just a movie. But I couldnt hold it the ending song at the last verse really got me bawling hard like crazy. If this movie made me feel all of these emotions then its definitely up there for me as one of the best movies out there yet.
Just saw it and I am sad to say that I was very disappointed! I was REALLY looking forward to it as I have seen two of the other versions. I feel it could've done so much more with their romance. They did not spend enough time really building up their romance to a believable or heartwrenching level! There was so much jumping around of little "snippets" of scenes and not enough dialog. As your bouncing all over the place in the little snippets you get lost in any kind of timeline. How much time really passed between when they met or married or the end? I was ready with tissues but didn't even shed a tear because I never felt the true intensity of their love and the last part of the movie did not build up the scenes enough to really let your emotions build up. Trying not to spoil it (possible spoiler alert) but the tragic ending kind of left you guessing and hanging . It could have been so much better and intense. They leave you to guess what happened and show a couple little snippets of her emotions and then the final scene. When I watch a "tear jerker" I actually want to be taken to that place and this never really made it there. I was so excited to see what they would do with this new version and even excited about the cast and early hype. There was so much potential to make this an amazing film but sadly it fell flat! So disappointed!
it was the best movie i saw this year
Overrated slow shit bullshit. No big deal.
Just saw the film yesterday. Oh my… I wasn’t prepared for the emotional journey it took me on. My one regret was that I didn’t bring tissues. Seriously, I was destroyed emotionally by the end credits started rolling.
I disagree; I think the first half was way better than the second half. Still liked (possibly loved?) the film. I knew Bradley wouldn't disappoint!
BEST ORINAL SONG at the oscars! You guys forgot that! If it doesn't win that I will be SHOCKED!
Is it me or the guy didnt really care for the movie hahaha. You can tell Perri was honest
THIS MOVIE IS TOTAL BULLSHIT! The Judy Garland AND Barbara Streisand versions are SO MUCH BETTER, as is the MUSIC! Cooper is no great singer , and GaGa is just becoming so jejune, reductive and recherche. Boycott this film! Hollywood is SO FULL OF SHIT!
WTF is wrong with this guy?? He comes off like a straight weirdo! Haha his voice and his face! Haha! Don't leave your kids alone with that dude hahaha
This movie is going to be GREAT!
Danielle and Bradley are amazing. Gaga is the most talented woman ever! She broke through effortlessly! I love her! Great role model!
Such a phenomenal movie. Musical chemistry reminds me of the film "Once". So good!
Hey man this movie sucks and it will suck why don't y'all come out and see Venom . Besides Venom looks better than Lady Gaga who looks like a lady boy goo'goo if you know what I mean .
