If you could login with sudo but not without sudo then do:

$ sudo mysql -u root -p

[mysql] use mysql;
[mysql] update user set plugin='' where User='root';
[mysql] flush privileges;
[mysql] q

Thanks for the solution. There is another way I just found out, you don't need to install phpmyadmin. You can update the 'plugin' of 'root' user to 'mysql_native_password' since default mysql uses 'plugin' = 'auth_socket'. will prevent to login of 'root'@'localhost'.
