The title says it all. Can you pair a 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X with a cheap B350 motherboard? Honestly, it all depends on the vendor. I found a few “stable” Zen 2 BIOS updates for B350 boards I had on hand and game it a shot… here’s what happened.

A quick update on the status of this project: 1) I'm getting ahold of that A320 board tomorrow. Stay tuned. 2) The VGA driver was only needed for Bristol Ridge APUs. Prevents you from losing display out when flashing. There's an edit in the video that should nix those clips soon. 3) I ran a Cinebench single core test and a few games to track frequency over time. Seems the chip refused to boost past 4274MHz. Still gave us a 490 cb single-core score, so not bad, but the lack of PB2/XFR2 and PBO definitely shows. All-in, expect about a 5-10% performance drop when opting for a B350/X370 motherboard. This, of course, ignores any thermal limitations you may run into and also assumes you won't be manually overclocking. Thanks for watching!

for years now I've been in the habit of changing processor, motherboard and RAM all in one go (or at the very least, mobo and CPU). I remember rather fondly that time when a single 430TX-based motherboard could support a Pentium [email protected] MHz, a Cyrix [email protected], a Pentim [email protected] (2×83), an AMD [email protected]… And then came the copyrighted Slot 1. Celeron [email protected]? When I wanted to change for a Duron 950 I had to change everything. Athlon64 X2 [email protected] ? The same – swap it all. Athlon II X4 [email protected] ? Swap! Intel Core i5 4670K? Complete swap again (I could have kept the RAM, but I didn't want to keep 4×2 Gb sticks).
And now finally, I got myself a X470-based board with a 2700X where I expect to be able to change for a CPU twice as powerful next year. For the fist time in more than 20 years, I won't have to rebuild my system from the ground up! Yay!!!

Looks like I don't have to retire my B350 I'm just gonna put a 2nd or 3rd Gen Ryzen 5 or maybe 7 in it.

I tried with my asrock ab350 itx/ac board that claimed it would work with it…..yeah it didn't. i even bought a 2nd gen Ryzen to try with it and it wouldn't work with it either. Even with the correct bios updates….ended up buying an msi b450 itx board and it worked immediately with my 3700x

It's normal for amd motherboards and cpus to cycle through posts the first time you start it up as a pair.

Hey Greg,

This video really helps me as I recently purchased an AMD system with a 3700x with a x470 motherboard. I take some comfort that when the time comes, I can upgrade to a higher core processor without having to upgrade my motherboard or memory, except for updating my bios. Thank you for sharing your attempts.
