Chip Kidd doesn’t judge books by their cover, he creates covers that embody the book — and he does it with a wicked sense of humor. In one of the funniest talks from TED2012, he shows the art and deep thought of his cover designs. (From The Design Studio session at TED2012, guest curated by Chee Pearlman and David Rockwell.)

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the “Sixth Sense” wearable tech, and “Lost” producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I'm also one of those people that sniff books after buying them. My childhood's books are plastered in my memory forever based on their smell.

I can't stand this guy. I can tell he's good at what he does but his personality is really annoying. The way he talks and then pauses…. like "hellooo?? I just said something funny… it's your turn to laugh ha ha ha" and "I'm too eccentric… I'm unique… I'm the form and content maker"

Such a gifted book jacket designer — awesome in every way. But he's a book jacket designer, not a book designer. A book designer works with the actual pages of the book, the font, the layout, any photos, etc.

Lesson?: make a joke, doesn't matter bad or good, stop talking, stare hard at the audience, wait for them to laugh (and if they didn't, u stare harder), and then proceed, with a nother joke, doesn't matter good or bad.

One guy in the audience was paid to laugh out loud, and he did it very well

So many questions:
Why are people laughing?
What's up with his glasses?
Why are people laughing?
Why is a headset skanky?
WHY ARE PEOPLE LAUGHING?

The part about the Dry cover is really a good example of knowing enough about the rules and why they are there to break the rules in a way that works.
